Review of The Notary Hotel in Philadelphia

TGT Rating: 6.5/10

In the bustling heart of Philadelphia, nestled amidst the vibrant life of the city, stands The Notary Hotel. This exquisite four-star boutique hotel, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, offers a blend of history, sophistication, and comfort that captivates from the moment one steps through its doors. My recent stay at The Notary Hotel provided a perfect vantage point to explore Philadelphia with our family, coupled with the warmth and elegance one desires from a hotel experience. Here's a dive into what makes The Notary Hotel a standout choice for travelers.

Location

A short walk to the Reading Terminal Market

The Notary Hotel's location is its first notable feature, situated within walking distance to an array of restaurants, shops, and iconic sites. A mere stroll away lies the Reading Terminal Market, a haven for food lovers and a cultural melting pot that mirrors the city's diversity. The hotel’s central location means that whether you’re here for the historical landmarks, the buzzing nightlife, or a culinary adventure, you’re perfectly placed to dive into the best Philadelphia has to offer.

Rooms

The rooms at The Notary Hotel strike a fine balance between spaciousness and cozy comfort. Cleanliness and attention to detail are evidently prioritized, with the room's aesthetics providing a warm welcome after a day of exploration. For those who treasure a sense of space and a clean, well-maintained environment to return to, the hotel checks all the boxes. While staying in a city that's bursting with history, it’s a refreshing contrast to find modern comforts and contemporary design waiting to embrace you back in your room.

There were a couple things that could have been better:

First, the bathroom door is odd. It is a sliding farmhouse door that locks by pulling on a small lever from the inside. However, because of where the lever is placed, the door would slide out until the stop latch is activated, leaving the door open. Not a huge issue, but I like to have my privacy when using the restroom and it wasn’t the most ideal door for a bathroom. Second, the closet to store your coats are extremely small. Again, not a huge deal as we were only there for a couple nights, but it would’ve been better if there were more space to store jackets (especially because it was freezing when we went and we had our heavy down parkas with us). The hotel also oddly did not have an ironing board/iron, which we did not need, but definitely something to note if you are staying here for business or have a special outfit that may need ironing.

Checking in and Staff

Check-in was a breeze, particularly with the Elite Member line, a perk of my Marriott Gold Elite status. This expedited process is a small but significant nod to the importance of time and comfort for travelers. Although no upgrade was offered during my stay—a feature often anticipated by members—it was hardly a point of contention, considering the short duration of our visit and the already commendable quality of the accommodation.

The staff interactions during my stay were minimal, which, in the context of a bustling city hotel, can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it speaks to the efficiency and smooth operation of the hotel, allowing guests autonomy and ease. On the other, it may leave some guests seeking a more personal touch or deeper connection with the place and its people. This aspect, however, did not detract from the overall experience, thanks in part to the hotel's ambiance.

The lobby area, with its array of books and large communal tables, invites a sense of community and intellectual engagement. It’s a space that feels both grand and intimate, encouraging guests to linger, whether to plan their day’s adventures in Philly or to unwind with a good book after a day’s exploration.

Concluding Thoughts

The Notary Hotel is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a gateway to the heart of Philadelphia, embodying the city's rich history and vibrant present. Its location alone makes it a prime choice for travelers keen to experience the city’s dynamic offerings. The rooms offer a sanctuary of comfort and cleanliness, ensuring that every return feels like coming home.

While the lack of personal interaction with staff may leave some yearning for a more bespoke service, the hotel’s efficiency, the charm of its public spaces, and the overall quality of the stay more than compensate for this. For Marriott Gold Elite members, the benefits of streamlined check-in and the quality of the accommodations affirm The Notary Hotel as a worthy choice, even in the absence of upgrades.

In conclusion, The Notary Hotel stands out as a beacon of hospitality in Philadelphia. It offers a seamless blend of history and modern luxury, providing a welcoming base from which to explore the city’s endless wonders. Whether you're visiting for the historical landmarks, the culinary delights, or simply the joy of travel, The Notary Hotel promises a stay that’s not just about the comfort of its rooms but about the experience of being at the heart of one of America’s most vibrant cities.
